Research Resources

The National Museums Collection Centre in West Granton is the location of the majority of our collections.  It has facilities for undertaking research on collections. It has conservation and scientific research laboratories. Analytical equipment ranges from UPLC, XRF, WEM to ERD and FTIR.

Further details can be found http://www.nms.ac.uk/about-us/research/research-facilities/

Those wishing to research the collections should contact the relevant curatorial departments.  Appointments have to be made in advance and we advise two working weeks as a minimum application turnaround. All research applications will be assessed according to departmental availability.

The Museum’s Research Library benefits from 230 years of collecting and is the largest museum library in Scotland.

The Museum’s research repository holds details of all recently published reports and articles by staff.
