PhD Collaborations

We support over 20 PhD students working with our collections and supervised by our staff. Our students are an important part of The National Archives’ research, and support engagement with and understanding of the records that we hold.

The National Archives participates in the AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) programme. We are one of 16 heritage organisations or consortia which have CDP funding in the fourth round of the scheme. From 2024-2026, we have 4 studentships per year available.

Our CDP studentships are delivered in partnership with universities, with each student being jointly supervised by one of our staff and a university supervisor. Find out more about our collaborative PhDs.

We also supervise a range of collaborative PhD students outside of the CDP scheme. Read more about our current students.
