Our collections can be researched by anyone. The library is open to the public and opening hours and access arrangements are available on the Natural History Museum Library and Archives webpage
Specimen collections are arranged by taxa, and mineralogy collections by class. They are accessed by contacting Principal Curators in Charge. Extensive or long-term research in specimen collections is often funded through grants, because they are closely invigilated resources. More detail on the Museum collection and staff can be found on the Collections web page.
Many of the Natural History Museum collections are being progressively digitised and are available through the data portal and library website: the Museum is driving collaborative development of digitised natural history collections across the UK with AHRC funding. The Museum has extensive laboratory facilities ranging from advanced imaging and CT to materials analysis, conservation and molecular sequencing: these support collections use and research in natural and heritage science.
Research Theme leaders can also be a first point of contact and can advise on how to start or develop research at the museum.
